Studio System: Experimental Residency 2026

The Torrance Art Museum is pleased to announce a call for artists for Studio System: Experimental Residency 2026, taking place August 1–29, 2026, in the Main Gallery at the Torrance Art Museum.

Studio System is a month-long experimental residency that brings the dynamism of the artist’s studio into the museum space. First launched in 2015, the program invites the public to experience artistic practice as it unfolds, offering a rare opportunity to observe works in progress and engage directly with artists in conversations about inspiration, process, content, and context.

Eight artists will be selected to use the Main Gallery as a shared working studio throughout the month of August. Artists will actively develop new work in an open, interactive environment, engaging with fellow residents while presenting their creative process for public viewing. Visitors are encouraged to follow the evolution of each artist’s work and interact with the artists throughout the residency.

Artists are expected to be present in the gallery at least four days per week, Tuesday through Saturday, from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Participating artists are required to create new work on site during the residency; finished work brought in from outside the residency period will not be exhibited. The program emphasizes experimentation, process, and development rather than the presentation of completed works.

The residency will culminate in a Closing Reception on Saturday, August 29, 2026, from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., during which artists will present the work created during their time in residence.
