Torrance, CA — The Torrance Art Museum (TAM) presents two exhibitions this fall: Baker’s Dozen 2026 and BLAM. Together, the exhibitions highlight the diverse practices shaping contemporary art today, bringing together artists from Southern California alongside an international exchange between artist-run initiatives in Berlin, Los Angeles, and Mexico City.

MAIN GALLERY: Baker’s Dozen 2026

Baker’s Dozen acts as a review of sorts—a survey exhibition featuring thirteen artists whose work made a positive impression on the curators over the past year. These thirteen artists reflect current directions in Southern California’s contemporary art practices.

Historically, a “baker’s dozen” refers to thirteen instead of twelve, originating in 13th-century England, when bakers would include an extra loaf of bread to avoid punishment by King Henry III for selling underweight loaves. This exhibition draws on that idea, acknowledging the curators’ own preconceptions and biases, while centering artistic endeavors rooted in the present moment.

Participating artists: Fritz Chesnut, Chelsea Culprit, Charles Hickey, Michael John Kelly, Paul Art Lee, Renée Pepion, David Schafer, Heidi Schwegler, Alise Spinella, Christian Spruell, Mark Dean Veca, Mark Whalen, Sining Zhu.

GALLERY TWO & DARK ROOM: B-LA-M

As part of the three-year BLAM international art festival, featuring artist-run initiatives from Berlin, Los Angeles, and Mexico City, this exhibition presents the work of members of Die Möglichkeit einer Insel (Berlin), UOOORS (Los Angeles), and Venice Institute of Contemporary Art (ViCA) (Los Angeles).

BLAM began in 2024 with 54 galleries exhibiting together in Berlin, with the goal of developing international cooperation and exchange between three global cities that play host to strong communities of contemporary artists and their self-run networks of gallery spaces and collaborative groups. In 2025, the event was held in Mexico City, and now it has come to Los Angeles.

In addition to this presentation at TAM, BLAM will also be staged at various gallery spaces across Los Angeles from October 28–November 4.
