Proposals to the TAM

Artists interested in having the TAM curatorial staff review their work, or proposals for group shows, should send a cd with images (no email submissions please), a statement about the work and their exhibition resume along with an introductory cover letter to:

Torrance Art Museum
c/o Max Presneill, Curator
REF: Artist Review
3320 Civic Center
Torrance, CA 90503, USA

Please be aware that we will not be replying to all submissions individually due to the large amount of requests. We also ask that you do not phone or email asking about the status of your review. The review process is for individuals artists -project proposals are for group exhibitions only and not solo shows.

If you would like your materials returned please enclose a self-addressed enveloped that includes the proper postage. All other submissions will not be returned.

Is there a deadline?
There is NO deadline. We see this as an ongoing process of engagement between the TAM and the local community, domestic and international artists, curators, and the public.

What was the address again to submit a proposal?

What's the deal with 'no electronic submissions' ...I like my email?
We understand. But we feel that proposals are best reviewed on disc. Therefore we ask that you do not email your proposals. However, should you have a question please email us so we may assist you.

How many images of the work do you require?
Generally, whatever you feel is necessary to demonstrate the breadth of the work being proposed. We recommend no less that 5 and no more than 15, unless otherwise justified by a large group show.

How would you like the images/jpegs prepared?
This is largely up to you. However, JPEGS are preferred and images that are larger than 700 pixels tend to be difficult to examine. Remember, this is being sent in on a disc, so you should have plenty of room on there.

Do you want resumes of each of the artists involved in the proposal?
Yes, please include a CV and statement whenever possible.

What other information should be included?
There may be other information necessary to demonstrate the breadth of work you are proposing. Please include this on the disc/mailed proposal -however, please keep in mind that, to be sent back, you must account for this in your return postage.

How long must the proposal be?
There is no length requirement for proposals

I am an artist, can I apply?
Yes, we look forward to seeing your proposal. Due to the number of submissions to exhibit at TAM, general submissions will not be replied to unless the work is accepted for shortlisting for a future exhibition. Individual/solo proposals can be sent to:

Torrance Art Museum
c/o Max Presneill, Curator
REF: Artist Review
3320 Civic Center
Torrance, CA 90503, USA

I am curator, can I apply?
Yes, we look forward to seeing your proposal. Please be sure to include a statement for your proposed exhibition as well as any artists information, shipping and logistical considerations, etc.

I belong to a local arts group, can I apply on behalf of my group?
Yes, we look forward to seeing your proposal.

I am an international artists, can I apply?
Yes, by all means. However please be advised that there is limited budget for shipping works so this should be considered when sending a proposal. An example might be work that is relatively easy and inexpensive to transport, or providing novel ides on how to fund that aspect in your proposal.
