Artist Steve DeGroodt, subject of currently running retrospective, Deeper than that, sits down in discussion with artist and writer Kay Whitney.

Deeper than that runs until March 12th, 2016.

The eleven works presented in Deeper than that are a combination of sculpture, painting, and drawing constructed as hyper-conscious assemblage. DeGroodt’s objects reflect ‘Psychic cling’, a metaphorical term of DeGroodt’s invention. Akin to the static cling caused by a charged accumulated through physical friction, ‘psychic cling’ occurs when encounters throughout a life encumber individuals and objects with psychic and historical associations. Deeper than that is DeGroodt’s attempt to work through these layers of materiality and association in order to punctuate the ‘veil’ that separates the ‘real’ from symbolically structured ‘reality’. Degroodt’s process regards intentionally obscured or partially revealed information as negations not to be construed as ‘mysteries’. Instead, these works offer the viewer a realm of “not knowing”, a despatiated interval where alternate realities are possible.
