1986 Renovation
The Torrance Art Museum underwent an extensive interior
renovation and opened October 2006. There are now 3,958 square feet of
total exhibition space. In the Main Gallery (2,922 sq ft),
exhibition walls were placed in front of the large, south facing
windows. Not only did this increase options for designing
exhibitions, these walls also shield sensitive artwork from the
direct sunlight which had been problematic in the past. A secondary,
skylit gallery/meeting room of 871 sq ft has been added. There is
also a smaller lobby gallery of 165 sq ft. With three, distinct
spaces for exhibition, we now host more exhibitions of
greater variety.
There are other new features that enhance
the facility as well. A better security system was installed to
protect artworks. The gallery spaces were lit with museum-quality
lighting equipment. Climate control was added. There is an arts
library/conference room. and on the north side, an enclosed patio
providing an informal meeting place for the entire Torrance Civic
Center campus. |
